The problem I was running into is that I migrated from MobileMe. Sp while it was asking me for my AppleID, what it really wants is my MobileMe login. They are not the same for me. So, if you migrated, try you MM login credentials. Although it sounds like you got it to work on the iPad, so that's probably not the issue.
