: They expect their delivery drivers to forgoe their fundamental human rights
: while delivering pizzas.
I disagree entirely. The simple matter of the fact is that he took the job knowing full well the company did not allow or accept drivers/workers to carry firearms or other weapons. They terminated him based on a breach of terms issue which they had every right to do. I am glad the guy came out of it okay and all, but when all is said and done, if you break a rule that your employer has in place, you are liable for termination. End of story and no opinions will change that.
Personally, I think he shouldn't be fired, but that's only on an emotional basis. On a logical one, he broke a rule of his employer's and was penalized for doing so. The specifics of the event SHOULD (in my opinion) have granted him some leniency but the corporation is choosing to follow it's rules to the letter and unfortunately that's their puragative. Awarding him would only have lead to more drivers choosing to arm themselves which could in turn cost the company millions in potential "accidental" injury lawsuits by trigger happy delivery people. There's a reason they have that rule as a company and they have insurance in place so that if a driver DOES unfortunately get jacked like in this case, the driver doesn't get screwed over, they don't lose out on money, etc...
What's easier, filling out paperwork with your company and the police over a theft or doing the same thing after potentially, fatally shooting someone even if in self-defense. Plus, TWO handguns on his person? WTF? did the attempted criminal drop his while fleeing the scene or did this driver just carry two with him normally?
