: Maybe this only shows up on MacBook Pros, but that would really surprise me.
My MacBook has this too. Don't know if the desktops to or not (I'm away from mine right now)
Interestingly, looking at the new keyboards on Apple's site, the BT version has the fn key which would allow you to use the volume/brightness/dashboard keys and the function keys, whereas the wired version does not. I suspect it is because the BT board has no number pad and you need the fn key for the uiopjkl;m,./ keys to act as one.
My old BT keyboard with the number pad also has no fn key. This hasn't been an issue for me, but I can see where it would be annoying. You either have the settings shortcut keys OR function keys. No easy way to toggle between.
What I don't like about the new boards is the assigned keys have icons associated with them now. I haven't used the default shortcut keys ever. I forget why, but for example I use F8 for the dashboard, rather than F4. If I ever do get a new keyboard, I suppose I could just ignore the icons and keep things my way, but I'm so cripplingly OCD about shit like that, I will have to go with the default layout. Maybe I should start practicing now . . . .
