I found something in the Apple forums. I changed the processor performance to reduced in the energy saver pref. That did the trick. Final Cut throws frames at me now but I opened up every browser I had and a bunch of tabs and opened YouTube videos in the tabs. Not a single fan came on. Problem solved. WooHoo!
