: To what end? It doesn't support gigabit ethernet, and a 10/100 or the very
: fastest wireless connections don't reliably play DVD movies remotely.

I've played a VIDEO_TS folder from a 10/100 ethernet connected Mac on my MBP connected via 802.11n. Seems like a DVD disc itself wouldn't be a stretch. What's the max bitrate on a DVD? 12 mbps? Plus the Apple TV could cache some data in advance.

: Apple doesn't want you treating your AppleTV like a Mac (even though it is
: one), so they aren't going to let you install software on it.

It would be pretty simple to only allow playing a DVD via shared optical drives.

I'm just saying it would be a good selling point if you could use the Apple TV as a DVD player as well. Optical drive sharing seems like a free, easy way they could get that done.

I don't really expect it to happen though.
