Apparently, the external superdrive will only work with the MBA which has a high powered USB port. Additionally, even if you use a split USB cable, power it off the MBA and connect it to another Mac, it will not work. Seems like Apple doesn't want to sell too many of these external superdrives.
New thought: they should make the optical drive sharing work with Apple TV.
