Apple claimed it was a stability issue. Clearly that is no longer

Well, have you checked to see if there's any Time Machine updates? Maybe they fixed or upgraded something which will now allow that. Just a thought mind you but I totally hear where you're coming from. Apple says it's a matter of stability, then releases a product 6 months later that does exactly what people wanted but were prevented by said ambiguous "stability issue" to do... That's pretty shady sounding...
