Last I heard that ranking was based on the first week sales. And they have fallen off a cliff since then.
In fact if you look at Amazon's top MP3 players the first Zune model is #17 following all the current iPod models except the 80GB white (23) and even an 1st gen nano.
Not to mention what you said about give-aways being counted as sales.
