: I guess so. You were doing full resolution? I was at something like 192x340
: (H.264, 600 kbps average)
Yeah, mine was full res, I think about 1000kbps average.
: How are you liking yours?
I have no complaints and have been consistently impressed. While Photoshop only sees a modest increase in performance in performance over my old hardware (UB will fix that eventually), Xcode builds my shit SOOOOOOO much faster than my old machine. It's also nice to finally be able to watch HD video and play the occasional game. I haven't yet had a project come up where I needed to spend any time in FCP or any other power hungry apps, but suffice to say I am quite happy with my purchase.
: I have to say that this 2nd revision is a pretty
: big improvement besides the obvious (FW800, DL burning, speed bump). I
: used the new one to zero out the HD on the old one and at the end I picked
: each one up and noticed a HUGE difference in the temperature. The old one
: is almost too hot to touch, the new one is only warm to maybe hot. Some
: people are reporting 40 F cooler average operating temperatures. On top of
: that, the new one makes no noise whereas the old one had this awful
: electronic buzz/whine when plugged in. It was really distracting
: especially b/c it would start and stop all the time. Lastly, I'm blown
: away by what (so far) seems like a 25% speed increase for a real world
: test like ripping a DVD.
AppleCare bought my GF one of the old MBPs because they couldn't repair her 12" PB, so I have one at my disposal for comparison and agree that the new model seems to generally run consistently cooler. Both of ours are dead silent until we play a game. If we both play Civ IV mine has kind of a noisy fan that kicks in, hers stays silent. I think this is probably due to the fact that the graphics chipset in the new models is clocked to it's full speed.
: My only complaint, is that my optical drive is fucked up. I can put a DVD in,
: play it, rip it, etc. But when I eject it, the drive keeps trying to eject
: for maybe 3 or 4 tries after the DVD is already out. Then it won't accept
: another disc unless I have it inserted when rebooting or waking from
: sleep. Kind of sucks to have that happen right out of the box, but
: fortunately there is a small, local certified repair center nearby. They
: diagnosed it in about 2 seconds when they heard the noise it made. Part is
: on order, I hold onto the machine until it comes in and then they say
: it'll only take a couple hours to replace. For the time being, I can
: "force" it to work or use my external drive.
Yeah, that's a bummer, so far mine hasn't had any issues...
