: Pretty much the same as Tester's G4 in an ATX case project.
: What ever happened to that guy anyway?
That certainly would be a cool article, but it doesn't look practical. I don't know where Tester has been, would be good to hear if he is still doing well.
: I also thought about an audio project, looking at lossy compression effects.
: For example, I can't find any good information on what would happen if you
: want to (for example) take an iTMS song, burn it, then reimport that AIFF
: file as 128 kbps AAC. Seems that the easiest way would be to compare
: waveforms, but I can't seem to find software to do that. I've gone through
: ~10 cycles of 192 kbps MP3 --> WAV --> 192 kbps MP3 etc, and can't
: hear a difference, but that doesn't mean there isn't one.
Actually a principle of a properly designed lossy CODEC is that if you compress audio and then decompress it and then compress it with the same CODEC with all the same settings, there should be no additional loss in sound quality. The only real question you would have on the iTMS songs would be whether Apple is using any different settings for encoding than the default 128kbps iTunes settings (iTunes only lets you choose bitrate, it doesn't let you tweak any other settings).
: Other half-ideas include a Windows --> OS X FAQ and/or common Mac
: questions/issues. I find myself giving out the same information over and
: over to people I know, it'd be nice to just point them to a webpage. Might
: also be considered rude though.
I think if written politely enough that it wouldn't really be rude. Telling someone where they can get information in my estimation is better than just giving them the answer. It teaches them SELF-RELIANCE! Sort of that "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime" principle at work there...
: That reminds me, I've been meaning to ask you to update the iMac repair page
: with my new email address. I'm trying to phase out the hotmail account and
: I still get emails now and then about the repair.
Yeah, e-mail me your new address (I've got the forum set such that no one, not even me, can see the e-mail address you enter into the E-Mail address field here.
: Smart move. You must have a really understanding girlfriend. I hope they put
: out the updated models soon. I'm going to Hawaii sept 8-20th and I'd like
: to have a nano for that trip.
Yeah, my GF is awesome that way. I honestly don't think she'd be upset if I returned it and bought something completely different, but she's also awesome in that she got me what I really wanted, I'm just going to wait to get whatever the improved version that comes out soon is...
